Handgun Crime in US Out of Control

Over the last few years, the number of sensational shooting incidents has increased all over the US which led to the people asking, should there now be a law to limit the purchase of guns? The fear is quite visibly palpable in the people, and ask the people living in Sandy hook, where 28 people died, including children, or the Naval yard in Washington DC where 12 people were killed, if they think that a gun control should be made. The answer most probably would be a yes. But the startling fact is that whole of America does not share this opinion. The fact that President Obama even lobbied for stricter gun control laws did not faze many conservatives. They insisted it was just a small measure and it was not the real problem as to the increased number of shootings that was happening.

Forex Market Reveals Cheating

The Forex market really hit a snag when a probe revealed cheating tactics done to the LIBOR or London Interbank Offered Rate. As it should be, the ideal is that the Forex market should be dominated by the market-based benchmarks like the trading and currency exchange going on in the market, and also a lot of other external factors. But the problem in the current foreign exchange system is that it is dominated by the banks. The LIBOR system heavily relies on the member banks declaring or computing their borrowing costs, and foregoing the currency benchmarks that should have been a good basis in the first place since these things cannot be conjured out of nothing.

Obama Care: Success or Epic Failure?

One of the major reasons the US Government shutdown was because of the Republicans trying to waylay the Obama Care. They went as far as not approving the budget by refusing votes so that the Democrats would give in to their demands to change a lot of thing about the Affordable Care act. In the end, the Democrats won the battle and the crisis then was averted, but everything goes back to the Obama Care, and is it really something good for the people or is it not?

The republicans may have a point when they say that a lot about Obama Care in unconstitutional, like private insurance companies’ old insurance policies getting canceled because of the law; or directly defying the GOP’s preference to let the market dictate things or have the final say. But it is not also good to assume that the Obama Care is a big failure, an epic failure as most conservatives would say it is. There are also fine points about this law which, though many insurance companies don’t like the idea, can help a lot of people. For example, there is the part of the Obama Care that talks about people with preexisting conditions. In the past, you are immediately refused insurance if you have a preexisting conditions, because companies know this is a big risk to insure. They will lose out on millions daily if these people would be given insurance.

US Debit Ceiling Crisis Averted

As the Republicans refused to initially budge in an effort to hobble down the Affordable Health Care Act, otherwise known as Obama Care, they have caused the shutdown of the Federal Government from October 1 through 16, 2013. But one party had to give in or everything will fall down to pieces; and in the end, it was the Republicans that folded, but at the same time averting a pending debt ceiling crisis.

What is the Debt Ceiling?

A debt ceiling is the amount of money that a country can borrow. Usually this money is used to fund the government for a fiscal year, run its services, and many other things. When the US government hits the “ceiling” and misses an interest payment to its bond holders, it will be in default, therefore lowering its credit rating and increases the cost of debt.

The Influence of the Obama Tee

In November 4, 2008, after the news reported that Senator Barack Obama had won in that year’s most grueling presidential election, the United States of America finally had its first ever African American president, and the people celebrated so much, as now it signified something new for the nation. A time for a breath of fresh air has arrived and it signaled a new hope for the country.

But even before Barack had won that election, earlier, months before, the signal and beacon of change had started, and this was best symbolized by the Obama tee that had spread like wildfire among the democrats all over America. What started out as a simple campaign poster for Obama, designed by artist Shepard Fairey, of an image of Obama’s face while the colors were changed into red and blue with the word Hope below the face, had now become a portrait of what the people wanted to happen in America. It was put into more posters, and even paraphernalia, specifically the Obama tee, and people wore it and it became an iconic symbol of repressed freedom and hope, much like how Che Guevarra’s image in the 1960s became an icon for the generation and was printed in shirts, stickers and many other materials.

Philippines Typhoon and the US Response

In the last week, a deadly Typhoon Haiyan hit central Philippines killing at least 10,000 people, and leaving millions homeless. This is indeed one of the biggest news alerts of the year and has affected many people not just in the Philippines. In such times the public receive immediate news updates on the catastrophe. This puts a lot of pressure on the governments around the world to respond in a timely manner.

Memories flood back to the local catastrophe in New Orleans. When Hurricane Katrina caused massive devastation. Life’s and livelihoods were lost in this unforeseen mayhem. All be it an isolated state, this put huge pressure on the US government. In particular George W. Bush Junior, at the time.

The question on many peoples mind is how is the US government going to help with this. What measures will they take to insure that the Philippines get the sufficient aid to survive such a devastating situation?
